Dear Diary,

Today I found out that we're going to Amsterdam to celebrate New Year's! I haven't been there since I accidentally got stuck there on the way back from Lockerbie! (You know, the time they lost my luggage and the plane was delayed and they kindly offered to let us sleep on the floor at the airport and provide us a blanket). My memories of it from last time and the time before are very hazy.
Last time, after a dozen parents phoning to complain and us desertees at the airport whining for a few hours, KLM kindly gave us a 20€ coupon each and a room at the Golden Tulip hotel. Of course, it was so late at night that nothing was open except for the bar.. and since the legal drinking age there is 16 (my age at the time), ... it was.. a very good night.

The memory before that... I can't even remember if it was Amsterdam. The Netherlands in any case. Visiting family friends who lived by a canal. Bridges, windmills... a cat that scratched my mother and who I called stupid, insulting the hostess. Me smearing footcream on my face so that I would be as pretty as the woman on tv, the allergic reaction, and my mother thinking I was allergic to cats. The frogs that emerged that very night from the canal and started a caucophonous karaoke that would last for the rest of the nights. The ducks in the water.

In short, my memories of the Netherlands are almost nothing but fond. I can't wait to see how much it has changed from my memories, and to see it with my more grown up (narrow-sighted) eyes.
