AUUuuUgh! Internet!

Warning: RANT!

I'm going through so much trouble just trying to set up a simple wireless connection. The root of the problem is this: I cannot get the computers to get on the internet through a wireless connection for the following simple reason:
I cannot access my router in order to configure it so that I do not need a cable connecting a pc to the router because right now I need to feed certain information into each and every pc that needs to exist in the router itself instead. I mean, basically, I need to get the router itself to know the ip address, gateway, etc. Otherwise I can go wireless and still not get on the internet because the required info is missing.

So, I try to reset the router to factory defaults to muck around with the settings and feed in the required info, because no password and login I try works. So I find a manual on the internet, reset it, and then try the factory defaults. No luck. Nothing happens. WTF? I wonder and search for other logins and passwords for the modem and its variations. I try all three. Nothing. I find out later that this particular connection's routers are hardwired - the factory default doesn't exist.
So I take my other modem and start fucking around with that instead, feeding in the info I know. Only there are too many options and I am missing two very vital pieces of information: the connection login name and the connection password. The only thing they've given me, after all, are the ip numbers. So I give up after a while and fall into despair.

So then I try to get my dad to ring the company - I can't do it myself since it's in the company's name and I have no authority to speak for the company. He manages to do something that I am still pretty darn excited about and really looking forward to - he manages to get our stinking lousy 256 adsl connection upgrated to a 1 mb one. (That comes into effect Tuesday). We also ask about the modem, wondering why we can't connect to it and why we can't get a wireless to work with it. He says the modem is too old. So we ask for a modem upgrade and he says they do not have a policy of handing out modems, even if the modem is broken.
So, I still can't get the wireless to work, since the guy he asks about the wireless tells us to contact customer services and sales. So after a week of harassing my dad, I finally get him to ring them. We are put on hold. And we wait. And we wait, putting up with the abysmal cheesy music. Then, guess what? The line breaks. Repeat. Line breaks. Repeat. Someone picks up. I wonder if the customer service amuses themselves by hanging up on people instead of picking up?

My father explains the problem to the lady far better and more clearly than I myself could have put it - I am fuming by this stage. So she knows nothing about any of this technical mumbo jumbo and puts us on hold while she contacts the IT department. More cheesy music. The IT guy picks up and my dad explains the problem. And the IT helper guy states something else which really really pisses me off:

In order to make any changes to the router, we would have to order a change. Unfortunately, he can't order a change without knowing what change should be made. Even more unfortunately, as he soon finds out, he can't access the our router for some reason to find out how it is configured, so he can't tell us what changes should be made. Instead he .. yes.. you guessed it.. sends us back to square 1 - we need to contact the guy who got us the speed upgrade in the first place and ask him for the configuration details, what changes need to be made, and to preferably make them at the same time as the modify the connection speed.

At this point, I would like to kill our modem with fire.
